At Beaverbrook Dental we understand that patients may require some form of sedation for their dental procedures. This may be due to having a strong gag reflex, dental anxiety or a fear of needles. Our goal is to keep you as comfortable as possible during your dental visit, so we offer different levels of sedation dentistry to help make your visit easier. The different types of sedation we offer are:
Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation
This is commonly known as laughing gas. This inhaled gas is administered gradually through a nose hood throughout your appointment. You must be able to breathe through your nose. This sedation works quite well for gag reflex issues as well as mild to moderate dental anxiety. While helping you feel relaxed, this route is also quickly reversed with a period of pure oxygen to flush the gas out of your system, allowing you to continue your day after your appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
For this procedure you will attend the office and be given an oral dose prior to your appointment. This level of sedation can help make you feel relaxed and sleepy. Patients need to have an empty stomach so the medicine can work better and need a drive home since the medication lasts several hours.
Intravenous Conscious Sedation
For more invasive procedures, or for patients with significant dental phobias or extreme gag reflexes, IV sedation may be a good option for you. Medications are incrementally administered by way of an IV to give you a deeper feeling of relaxation. While you are technically still awake, you are in a "twilight" state of sedation where you will most likely feel like you are asleep, but will still be responsive to the dentist. Most patients typically have some level of amnesia following an IV sedation, so you are unlikely to the recall the appointment.
Following oral and IV sedation appointments, you WILL be required to have someone escort you to and from your appointment. We advise you to spend the day at home and avoid activity to recovers as well as have someone spend the day with you until the medications have been fully eliminated from your system. You are legally impaired for 24 hours following this type of sedation.
If you are interested in Sedation Dentistry or have questions about whether or not you are a candidate for any levels of sedation, please let your dentist know and they will be happy to discuss these options with you.
Beaverbrook Dental follows the Manitoba Dental Association’s recommended Fee Guide. For our patient’s convenience, we do direct billing to most insurance companies. In cases where your insurance company does not accept electronic submissions we will have your claim forms ready to sign after your appointment and submit them on your behalf. Once we receive payment from your insurance company, either through electronic submissions on the day of your appointment or when submitted manually, you are responsible for paying the remaining balance. If you have a second insurance, please let us know, and we can take care of billing that for you as well.
It is important to note that every insurance plan is different, and due to the privacy act, insurance companies may not disclose your insurance information to us. It is your responsibility to know what your plan entails - if you have any questions our receptionist will gladly help you out!
